The New York Cosmos Hire Eric Cantona as Ambitious MLS Bid Takes Flight

new york cosmos eric cantonaMembers of the New York Cosmos' office staff -- the only people currently employed by the soccer club without a team -- began arriving at their Manhattan headquarters at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Selling a product that doesn't exist is mighty hard work.

By that time, the British media already was in a lather over the late-night announcement that the company/logo had hired former Manchester United forward, Nike pitchman, occasional actor and dime-store philosopher Eric Cantona as director of soccer.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Erecting World's Largest HD Screen

CONCORD, N.C. -- Three tour buses slowly circled Charlotte Motor Speedway Tuesday and stopped on the backstretch, disgorging dozens of media members into the cold winter air next to the construction site of billionaire O. Bruton Smith's latest promotional extravaganza -- the world's HD largest video board.

This television screen will be 200 feet wide by 80 feet high and will tower some 30 feet higher than the backstretch lights. It will be visible -- with an impressively large image -- from every seat of the grandstands stretching from turn four all the way down the frontstretch and well into turn two.

In typical speedway fashion, the announcement included fanfare -- in this case the arrival of Marcus Smith, speedway president, and FOX NASCAR announcers Jeff Hammond and Mike Joy, all driving front end loaders.

But many in the media were more interested in hearing from Marcus Smith's father, Bruton, who parked his jet-black, brand-new Mercedes right there in the middle of the backstretch just a few yards away.

As a promoter, Smith goes back to the earliest days of NASCAR. He's always been the most innovative of the major racing promoters, and he's always been one to speak his mind. So despite the fanfare engineered by his son, when Bruton stepped out of his car, he was the one who was quickly surrounded by eager reporters.

Matt Wiman Dominates Cole Miller at UFC Fight for the Troops 2

by Michael David SmithFormer Ultimate Fighter housemates Cole Miller and Matt Wiman went at it at the UFC Fight for the Troops 2 on Saturday night, and in a surprising result, it was Wiman who took the fight to Miller for 15 minutes, grounding and pounding his way to a one-sided unanimous decision.

The win improves Wiman's record to 13-5 and puts him on a three-fight winning streak. Miller falls to 17-5 with one of the most disappointing showings of his career, a fight in which he hardly ever got off his back and took a serious beating.

"I was going through a lot of nerves before this fight," Wiman said. "It was probably the most nervous I've been."

Those nerves didn't show -- Wiman looked poised and confident.

One-Armed Kevin Laue an NCAA Basketball Inspiration to All

Filed under:

Kevin Laue

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- Kevin Laue was 10 years old the day his father died, ending the gut-wrenching torment the two endured -- a cancerous brain tumor that painfully sucked the life from a big, vibrant man and traumatized the son, robbing him of his innocence and a bond he desperately needed.
If only dad could see him now.

A decade later, Laue has grown into one of America's most inspirational stories, overcoming a serious birth defect to become the first and the only NCAA Division I basketball player with one hand.

He's become something the father never thought possible.

"It's a difficult subject now, but I would have loved to have my father here to see me play -- just one game, any game -- so he could see what I've done,'' Laue told FanHouse recently. "All I can do now is hope that he would be proud of me, and what I've become."

Americans Abroad: Maurice Edu Scores for Rangers

maurice edu us national teamThe U.S. national team's central midfield depth chart seems to get more and more crowded by the week.

Presumed starters Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley recently left less-than-enviable club situations for new homes in the English Premier League, with Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa (still to be finalized), respectively.

Stuart Holden has been starring at Bolton, Sacha Kljestan has been contributing at Anderlecht, and despite playing different positions for much of their careers, Jonathan Spector and Jonathan Bornstein are getting minutes in the middle for their clubs.

Then there's Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and José Torres, who went to the World Cup, and up-and-comers like Mikkel Diskerud and Dax McCarty.

Amid it all, Maurice Edu is doing his best to avoid getting lost in the shuffle.

Making his second start for Ranters since returning from a two-month injury layoff, Edu scored the opener in Saturday's 2-1 win over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semifinals.

Cal Coach Jeff Tedford Rooting for Aaron Rodgers in Super Bowl

How fitting that Cal football coach Jeff Tedford was on the two-lane road heading into Chico for a recruiting trip Wednesday -- just days after his last success story from the same small California college town earned a ticket to the biggest show in sports.

Tedford watched his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, lead the Green Bay Packers to Super Bowl XLV by winning the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. He watched as a fan, cheering for Rodgers and another former Cal player and Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop. And he watched as a coach.

"I'll break it down, watch tendencies, that kind of thing," Tedford said. "But mostly, I was rooting for him and Des. I was watching both sides of the ball."

Tedford is the coach who discovered Rodgers. Rodgers had not been offered a Division I scholarship and he was playing at Butte College in Chico when Tedford spotted him while there to recruit another player.

Tedford, who had previously mentored Trent Dilfer, Kyle Boller and David Carr, turned Rodgers from an under-regarded passer into a star college quarterback. Rodgers was named the starting quarterback by the fifth game of his debut season at Cal. He led Cal to bowl games at the end of the 2003 and 2004 seasons, finishing 10-1 in 2004, including a loss at USC in which Rodgers tied an NCAA record with 23 consecutive passes completed in one game.

Nice, respectful Nick Diaz ready for 'Cyborg'

At the Strikeforce press conference, Nick Diaz spoke about Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, the man who will try to take away his Strikeforce welterweight championship belt on Saturday. Diaz, the man who perfected the finger-in-your-face staredown, spoke with respect.

"I feel good and I’m ready to fight. Cyborg has a unique style and I know that he will give it his all and be as crazy as ever. But that’s good because I’m crazy, too," Diaz said. I have great respect for Cyborg. He is strong and has skills and comes real hard. I feel he deserves a shot."

Cyborg returned the respect.

“Nick Diaz is a very gallant fighter but I will press the action whether we are standing or on the ground," Cyborg said.

Gallant! I can think of no better word to describe Diaz.

'Jacare' Souza keeps belt with win over Lawler at Strikeforce

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza defended his Strikeforce middleweight championship belt using the world-class jiu-jitsu he is known for, submitting Robbie Lawler with a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Jacare took Lawler down early in the first round, but when he switched to a guillotine, Lawler was able to get back to his feet. From there, violent stand-up erupted with Lawler throwing big strikes. He used a knee and a combination of punches to knock him to the ground. For some reason, Lawler followed Jacare to the ground, and was controlled on the ground until they were stood up with just 0:25 left in the round. Lawler finished the round strong, throwing strikes until Jacare tried for another takedown.

In the second round, Jacare controlled Lawler on the ground. He punished Lawler with strikes and tried for several submission attempts, but Lawler showed evolution in his fight game, working out of each and every submission attempt with one of MMA's best grapplers.

That submission defense magic disappeared in the third round, as Jacare took Lawler down early. He took his back, slapped on a body triangle and then slipped in a rear naked choke. Lawler tapped at 2:00 in the third.

The difference in this fight was takedown defense. Though Lawler is now training in Arizona with former All-American wrestlers Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway, he couldn't stop four of Jacare's six takedown attempts.

Souza is undefeated with Strikeforce after fighting for Dream and Brazilian-based promotions, earning a record of 14-2. Lawler, who just signed a new contract with Strikeforce, is 18-7.

What fighters go through for your entertainment

At the beginning of each UFC pay-per-view, the UFC plays an opening video that likens the UFC to gladiators, like this one from UFC 124:

But how much do today's fighters have to do with the gladiators of ancient Rome? Quite a bit, it turns out. Like Maximus, they put their bodies through hell so that you'll be entertained, but they don't give much thought to the future. In a column from MMA Fighting, Strikeforce fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller recognizes the risks, but says it doesn't change anything.

"Athletes know this stuff. We do," said Miller. "We're not dumb. It's like that new research that links head injuries and Lou Gehrig's disease. Well, duh, science. Thanks for telling us what athletes already know. We know what we're doing to ourselves. It's the elephant in the room. We're giving our bodies for the entertainment of the masses. I'm okay with that. I've had plenty of surgeries. I know there's a chance that I could be retarded. I know that."

MMA is far from the only sport where athletes take these risks. Football players take on massive amounts of punishment, as do boxers and hockey players. But it's worth reading the entire article to hear how fighters we know and love have paid the price.

Alex Edler Has Back Surgery, Out Indefinitely for Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks spent a lot of cap money to bolster their defensive corps last summer, adding Dan Hamhuis in free agency and Keith Ballard in a trade with Florida.

It's a good thing that general manager Mike Gillis made those moves. Sami Salo was injured during the offseason, and now Alex Edler is out indefinitely.

Edler missed Wednesday's win over Nashville with back spasms, and the team announced Thursday that Edler will undergo back surgery.

Face-off! The best staredown techniques in MMA

Two randomly, great staredowns took place at the weigh-ins for the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2. Fighters use several different techniques to gain an edge during weigh-ins.

The La-La-La I can't see you technique: Anderson Silva (above left) used this before his bout with Chael Sonnen in response to the many unsavory things that Sonnen said about Silva before the bout. It worked for Silva, as he won in the final minutes of the title match with Sonnen. Cheick Kongo tried it against Frank Mir, but it didn't work as well.

The sharing-is-caring method: At FFTT 2 weigh-ins, Yves Edwards was hungry. After all, he had just cut down to 155 pounds. He snacked on some potato chips, and was kind enough to share a chip with his opponent, Cody McKenzie. That streak of kindness helped Edwards, who won with a rear-naked choke. This technique was also employed at UFC 94 by Akihiro Gono, who shared his extra-large wig with Jon Fitch, but it didn't turn out so well for Gono. He lost in a decision.

The finger-in-the-face gambit: Ah, Nick Diaz. Don't ever stop being you. At a press conference before his bout with Frank Shamrock, Diaz gave the Stockton Heybuddy to his opponent. Though Shamrock laughed it off, Diaz did win in a second-round TKO.

The Two-Thumbs-Up: Damarques Johnson and Mike Guymon's face-off resembled something from this site, but also notched a zero on the intimidation scale. Perhaps that was part of Johnson's plan, as he won with a body triangle at Fight for the Troops 2.

The Glory Days: At UFC 123, old friends Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson paid tribute to their roots by facing off as they did when wrestling in college. Simpson told Cagewriter that they had planned on wearing their college singlets, but Munoz couldn't find his. Munoz won the decision, but this technique wasn't really about intimidation.

Blues' David Backes Relishing All-Star Nod

CALGARY - Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal should be very careful whom they choose in their All-Star fantasy draft. They wouldn't want to rile David Backes.

"I've already mentioned if I'm picked last, there's going to be quite a few body checks thrown," joked Backes. "So that's just a forewarning for anyone picking teams."

In truth, the 26-year-old will probably be happy to just be in the same room as the rest of the National Hockey League's finest as he realizes a dream come true. Backes is the lone St. Louis Blues' representative in the weekend extravaganza, duly rewarded for what has been a fine season.

"It's something I've always wanted to do," he explained. "You're always watching the game at home as a kid and see some of the skills on display, it's pretty impressive. I'm just hoping I can fit in pretty well."

His most vivid memory?

"Actually, Jeremy Roenick, when he started hitting one game, I took note of that. Other than that, it's for fun. No one wants to get injured putting on a show for the fans."

Whither Keith Olbermann Now That MSNBC Is in Rearview Mirror?

by Milton Kent

Keith OlbermannWhere do you go when every bridge you've crossed has been burned behind you?

That's the question facing Keith Olbermann now that his time at MSNBC has come to an abrupt end. Olbermann, who, when teamed with Dan Patrick in the 1990's turned ESPN's SportsCenter into must-see TV, announced that he was leaving Countdown, MSNBC's most popular prime-time program, at the end of Friday's show.

Neither Olbermann nor NBC News, which owns MSNBC, would say why he was leaving, though many media observers have linked the notion that NBC-Universal just this week received governmental permission to be acquired by communications giant Comcast to his stepping down. An NBC spokesman told NPR that the two items were not connected.

There still may be places for Olbermann to turn up, even back in sports. For instance, Olbermann is known in baseball circles as a historian, which could make him a prime candidate to serve as an anchor on MLB Network. Olbermann would also be an intriguing choice for a show on HBO, which could have elements of news and sports.

And despite his having been bounced from MSNBC and from a spot on Football Night in America, one wonders if a rebranded Versus or an entirely new NBC sports channel wouldn't welcome a personality like Olbermann's, even if he is anathema to conservative viewers.

Wherever Olbermann might land, he'll bring significant baggage and a reputation for being difficult to work with. He famously flamed out at ESPN, then went to FOX Sports Net, where his sports highlight show failed to gain traction against ESPN, though he also was a studio host on FOX's baseball coverage.

He joined MSNBC in 2003, and gradually molded Countdown into a liberal challenger to Fox News' prime-time lineup. Though Countdown was MSNBC's most-popular program, it never approached the ratings of Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity, Olbermann's principal competitors. He openly feuded with O'Reilly.

Olbermann was suspended for two days in November for contributing to Democratic candidates, a violation of NBC News policy.

Upsets Abound on Black Saturday -- Who Should Be Worried?

Eleven ranked teams lost in what we could call Black Saturday. No. 16 Minnesota lost to No. 12 Purdue and No. 11 Missouri was beaten by No. 7 Texas. But what about the other nine? Did we see something Saturday that should raise the proverbial red flag? College basketball editors Ray Holloman and Matt Snyder weigh in with an impromptu roundtable, checking in with each team that was upset, in order of which they occurred.

Mike Holmgren Knows What It Means to Win in Green Bay

CLEVELAND -- There is no other city in the country with a team like the Green Bay Packers, and there is no other city with a relationship with its team like Green Bay.

Mike Holmgren understood, but he really understood deeply when he worked as Packers coach from 1992-98.

"It hits you from the first step when you get off the airplane," Holmgren said this week from Cleveland, where he is now president of the Cleveland Browns. "You drive down Lombardi Avenue to the facility. You see the pictures of Bart Starr and Jerry Kramer and Paul Hornung.

"If you know football at all, and I like football ... I was kind of a historian ... you can't help it but feel it. You just can't help it."

NFL Should Look To Hockey, Soccer on Flagrant Fouls

Aaron RodgersIf the National Football League is serious about reducing vicious blows to the head, it can add a new rule that borrows a little from hockey and a little from soccer.

In addition to walking off yardage against the transgressing team, football could establish a virtual penalty box that forces a team to use 10 men instead of the usual 11 for one or more plays after a dangerous foul.

An example of the need for such a rule came Sunday in the NFC Championship Game when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears, 21-14, for the right to play Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

In the fourth quarter, defensive end Julius Peppers of the Bears was penalized 15 yards for delivering a blind-side hit to the head of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has already suffered two concussions this season.

"He lowers his head, leads with the crown and it's helmet-to-helmet,'' FOX announcer Troy Aikman said while watching the replay. "It's a wonder there that Rodgers (was) even able to get up.''

The screen showed Rodgers rising slowly and with difficulty to his feet with blood on his tongue while Peppers argued with the officials. In addition to the Bears losing 15 yards, Peppers was fined $10,000, it was reported a few days later.

Despite the league's crackdown on such hits, the risk/reward ratio of these fouls still makes it tempting for tacklers to hit quarterbacks this way.

Even a loss of 15 yards is worth the risk if such a collision puts a star quarterback out of a game or leaves him at less than his best. So why not do it? Even a fine of $10,000 is a small deterrent, especially if a player earning millions of dollars has bonus money in a contract related to overall team success.

Star-Studded Lineup For Rolex 24 at Daytona; Porsche Leads the Way

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The reigning NASCAR and IZOD IndyCar Series champions highlight a star-studded field for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Grand-Am Series' season-opener at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.

But it's one of sports car's more traditional names, Porsche, that both five-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson and two-time IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti will be chasing when the green flag drops at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday.

German Jorg Bergmeister will start the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche from the pole Saturday in the twice-around-the clock event that has again attracted a Who's Who list of auto racing greats.

Three Indy 500 winners, defending Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray (above left) and a potent mix of current and former NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula One drivers are giving it a go against the best sports car drivers in the world on the 3.56-mile Daytona road course.

Johnson and McMurray are trying to join Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt as the only drivers to win a Daytona 500 and Rolex 24 crown. Johnson will co-drive with former series champs Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in the No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet and will start 10th in the marquee Daytona Prototype class. They were fastest in Friday's final practice.

McMurray is part of an two-car wonder lineup for three-time Rolex winner Chip Ganassi Racing. He'll co-drive the No. 02 BMW with three IndyCar Series champs, Scott Dixon, Franchitti and open-wheel-to-NASCAR convert Juan Pablo Montoya (above, center, chatting with Memo Rojas). They will start fifth among the 18 prototypes .

The other Ganassi car features defending Grand-Am Series champs Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas along with Ganassi's newest IndyCar driver Graham Rahal and sports car veteran Joey Hand. It will roll off third.

Richard Childress Reflects on Dale Earnhardt, Predicts an RCR Title

WELCOME, N.C. -- Richard Childress knew the questions were coming. But that didn't make it any easier.

On Feb. 18, it will have been 10 years since his best friend, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, was killed in the last corner of the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

Earnhardt drove Childress' black No. 3 Chevy to six of his titles and most of his glory. But more than that, the two were like brothers -- best friends, hunting buddies, business partners.

So even before the NASCAR media descended upon the Richard Childress Racing headquarters about an hour north of Charlotte on this rainy, cold Tuesday afternoon, Childress had prepared himself for the inevitable questions as the sport solemnly marks 10 years since it lost its greatest star and Childress lost his greatest friend.

"I'm not dreading it, so to speak, but I know there's going to be a lot of questions that I know deserve answers and some of the answers I'm the only person that can give,'' Childress said during a nearly hour-long interview on NASCAR's annual preseason media tour.

"It (the accident) almost seems like yesterday because you're always still remembering and thinking of what's happened since that time. Ten years, it just doesn't seem like it.''

Movie critic gets the 'creeps' seeing kids try MMA, Jason Statham disagrees

The UFC can hold all the press conferences it wants, but there's still going to be that element of potential critics who have their pre-conceived notions about mixed martial arts.

Mark down movie critic Jeffrey Lyons as an opponent. The longtime movie guru in the New York area asked actor Jason Statham if there should be a minimum age for kids to train in MMA. Statham, a fan and student of MMA, intelligently shot him down.

It's not just Lyons. Check out the comment thread on this TapouT-Ruffo brothers commercial. There's lots of folks around the world who are still in the dark on MMA.

Scenes from the UFC's weekend at Ft. Hood for Fight for the Troops 2

The UFC's Fight for the Troops 2 was not just a fight card that featured two TKOs in the co-main events, or even a fundraising event for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. (By the way, the auction and donation drive will continue until Sunday evening. Donate or bid here.) Just as Bob Hope once did, the UFC also spent the weekend entertaining the troops.

UFC fighters Brian Stann -- a veteran of the Marine Corps -- and Jim Miller signing autographs.

The Octagon Girls -- Arianny, Chandella and Brittney -- hung out on top of a tank before the weigh-ins.

Of course the UFC would have a helicopter.

The soldiers on hand presented colors, and the national anthem was sung, something that usually doesn't happen at UFC events. The sight of every service member standing at attention during the "Star-Spangled Banner" was quite moving.

The scene from Ft. Hood, which was described by our photographer Tracy Lee as one of the best UFC events she's ever been to. Considering how rarely she misses fight cards, that's quite a compliment. Kudos to the UFC for not only raising money and awareness for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, but for giving the troops at Ft. Hood a weekend where they could take their minds off the fighting that they have to face.

The Works: Who Are the NBA's Ten Best Ten-Year Vets?

Today in
The Works: Old people we admire, and why. It's very subjective.

Still Awesome After All These Years

The NBA is largely a young man's league, a place where athleticism and youthful energy can still get a team far. Teams, though, depend on the efficiency and smarts that usually only come with experience. However, at some point age becomes a weight rather than a positive. The players who can play great even into their dotage deserve praise, and that's why we decided to honor the 10 best players with 10 years of experience. Odd picks belong to Eric, evens are from Shoals (except for 7 and 8, which somehow got swapped because we forgot math).

Herschel's involvement in MMA prompts one columnist to call the sport a circus

Herschel Walker's MMA career continues to confuse those outside the sport. The former NFL and college star is attracting the eyes of many media members who haven't bought into MMA as a legitimate sport, but at what cost? John Canzano can't be the only newspaper columnist thinking the sport is a joke because it's promoting a 48-year-old football star in the cage.

I want to like this sport. I want to understand it. I want to cover it, and write about it, and take it seriously. But how can I while the sport itself aims to be a circus?

Canzano wrote that in the Oregonian on Saturday in advance of Walker's fight this coming weekend against someone named Scott Carson.

[...] This matchup is a joke. It feels like Tonya Harding boxing. And dwarf Eddie Gaedel having an at-bat for the St. Louis Browns in 1951. And it's Chad Ocho Cinco racing against a horse.

Canzano then made sure to point out that Walker is fighting for Strikeforce not the UFC.

It's worth noting that Strikeforce is promoting this bout. That operation is a more sensationalized, more desperate younger cousin of the UFC. Hard-core mixed martial arts fans are quick to point this out and dismiss this as no big deal. Trouble is, the peripheral sports fan who is just getting to know the sport can't, and won't, make this distinction. I can't, either.

He's right, but frankly, in spite of James Toney's lengthy boxing resume, Walker may have stood a better shot in the cage at UFC 118 against Randy Couture. The UFC played the circus game a bit last year too.

Is Canzano, who's also a talk show host on Portland's biggest sports talk station, overreacting or does he speak for many casual and non-MMA fans?

Feel free to reach out to Canzano to debate the topic on Twitter @johncanzanobft, but remember to be civil. There's no reason to represent the MMA fanbase poorly

Philadelphia Union's Partnership With Bimbo About More Than Just a Name

philadelphia union bimboThe Sept. 1 friendly between the Philadelphia Union and Mexican power Chivas de Guadalajara at PPL park wasn't just your average American soccer marketing ploy.

It turns out the game was as much about fishing for dollars with the large logo on the front of the opponent's famous red-and-white jersey as it was about fishing for fans with the small badge toward the top.

That big logo, of course, reads "Bimbo." To Americans, it's an amusing and relatively misogynistic insult. But to everyone south of the 2-0 parallel, it's just a loaf of bread.

Soccer is the global game, and as such, it's played in many different languages. Sometimes certain subtleties can get lost in translation. On Tuesday, the Union announced an ambitious sponsorship deal that's going to test those boundaries. Bimbo, the baked good conglomerate pronounced "Beembo," will pay a reported $12 million over four years to be the Union's presenting/jersey sponsor.

Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz told FanHouse that the Chivas friendly "was somewhat tactical because we were in conversations with Bimbo at the time."

Walker lives the simple life at San Jose hotel: Training and little else

Herschel Walker is worth millions. He's a big car collector. The former star college and NFL running back has 63. At 48, he's accomplished a helluva lot, yet he's turned back the clock and living a simple existence in a San Jose hotel for the last six weeks.

"This is my little thing. I do my work. Everyday I stay in this hotel room. It ain't about going out," Walker told Shootmedia.tv. "I don't go out to nightclubs. I don't go out and party. I never have."

Walker said the trainers at American Kickboxing Academy, where he's worked on his MMA skils for the last few years, have done too much for him to screw around.

"I have a resonsibility to those people who have given me a hand. I have a responsibility to AKA for giving me a chance, an opportunity."

Walker faces 40-year-old Scott Carson this weekend in San Jose for Strikeforce.

For the kiddies, check out the old highlights of Herschel steamrolling people during his Georgia days on his way to the 1982 Heisman. Walker also says he's still doing a minimum of 750 pushups and 2000 sit ups a day.

Greg Jackson Evangelizes for MMA on Local TV

by Michael David SmithThis local TV news interview with mixed martial arts coach Greg Jackson doesn't break any news for anyone who follows the sport, but it's interesting for a few reasons anyway.

For starters, it's a reminder of how far MMA is from being mainstream: When a local channel (in this case, KRQE in Albuquerque) does a show on MMA, they feel the need to spend a full minute telling the viewers to brace themselves because it's "not for the faint of heart." It's just assumed that most of the viewers will have no idea what MMA is, and will be turned off when they see the footage.

But once we get that bit of unpleasantness out of the way, the interview is also interesting because Jackson does such an impressive job of portraying MMA as a cerebral exercise, not a violent competition.

Viking trash talk: Wren says Lesnar is a poser

Who knew there was such angst and jealousy in the world of Vikings? Brock Lesnar tabbed himself a nordic warrior, grew a gnarly beard and bagged a deer during a hunting trip to Canada. Justin Wren, a fellow American MMA fighter of Scandanavian descent, took Lesnar to task. Apparently, Lesnar isnt Viking enough. Wren posted on the Underground Forum that Lesnar's beard was weak and phony:

One had a beard for a month... The other was the only student with his own razor at middle school.

One was clean shaven for over 30 years... The other hasn't shaved once since high school (5 1/2 years)

Wren says deer, schmeer.

One shoots a deer from HUNDREDS of yards away ... and carries it out.

The other's FIRST hunt, he used only a 3 inch knife, chased down hog, flipped it to it's back, ripped out it's heart, and carried out the "Brock" sized hog over a 1,000 yards out through heavy brush, creek beds, cactus, 2 & 1/2 weeks after back surgery.

Wren finished by mocking on Lesnar for eating deer sausage while he was feasting hog hearts, one evidently exhibiting the stab wounds.

This is clearly some good-natured ballbusting. If not, Wren, a former contestant on Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter," better get his career into gear so we can see the "Yuppie Viking' against the "real Viking' at UFC 154. Check out Wren's website.

Dana White on MMA in NY, Sonnen & Barnett, and frogurt - Dana White

The Fight Nerd met UFC President Dana White at their UFC in NY press conference last week, and had a chance to grab a one on one with the man. After a short technical difficulty, White tells us about their plans to get MMA in NY, and also talks about his reaction to Chael Sonnen's current problems, as well as if he thinks Josh Barnett will be licensed to fight in the US due to his trio positive drug tests, which Scott Coker told us he thinks there will be no problems getting things resolved. After fumbling through some questions, I finally pop the big question -- what flavor of frozen yogurt does Dana White like? Why did I ask that, you may ask. Because it was the perfect set-up to my ballsiest move ever -- asking Dana White for a press pass to UFC 128 in Jersey. What does Dana have to say to that? Better check out the video to find out!
