Jose Aldo TKOs Manny Gamburyan at WEC 51

by Michael David SmithThe featherweight king of mixed martial arts has retained his crown, and done it easily.

World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Jose Aldo landed a huge uppercut and a few more punches on the ground to beat Manny Gamburyan by technical knockout in the second round of their main-event bout at WEC 51.

"In the first round I was just studying to see what I could do, and then in the second round I put all the work that we've done in the gym into the cage, and I was able to knock him out," the Brazilian Aldo said in the cage afterward, through his translator. "If it's up to me my reign will last forever."

John Wall Changes Everything for the Wizards

Wizards Season PreviewWASHINGTON -- While the biggest story out of Wizards media day was the return of Gilbert Arenas, the biggest takeaway was the level of enthusiasm in and around the organization. For a program that finished with 26 wins last season, there is a ton of optimism surrounding the franchise.

That's because of John Wall.

"We got the number one pick, the energy in the building has changed," Nick Young said.

Our esteemed NBA editor Matt Watson called it a rebooting of a the franchise, a categorization that JaVale McGee ran with on Monday. "Definitely a rebooting -- a whole new operating system it feels like," McGee told FanHouse.

And so that's where the Wizards stand. A new roster, a new owner in Ted Leonsis, a new (at least outwardly) Arenas, and above all, a new centerpiece.

Wall isn't afraid of this burden, but deflected suggestions that it's already his team. "I just want people to know, it's just not me," he said. "It's us as a team. I don't want to get treated differently."

FanHouse's Jay Mariotti Pleads No Contest to Misdemeanor

by FanHouse Newswire

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles city attorney's office says FanHouse and ESPN personality Jay Mariotti has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery count stemming from an August incident involving a female companion.

City attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan says Mariotti was sentenced Thursday to 36 months of probation, community service and a domestic violence course.

Mariotti was originally charged with seven counts, but Mateljan says all other counts were dismissed.

A statement issued by Mariotti's attorney says they were confident of prevailing at trial but it would have been long and expensive. The statement claims Mariotti was the victim of false and exaggerated allegations stemming from a public argument.

US Ryder Cup Team

NEWPORT, Wales -- The doors are closed to only the inner circle of Team USA -- players, their wives/significant others, caddies and officials. Twitter messages have been muted. A vow of secrecy taken.

What happens in the team room stays in the team room.

But if you listen closely from outside you might recognize the sounds of "Kumbaya."

"It's a good team so far," Ryder Cup rookie Dustin Johnson said. "Everybody's in good spirits. Everybody is hanging out. So we got a lot of energy in the room. It's coming from everybody."

For this week, the every-man-for-himself PGA Tour mantra has been replaced with a foxhole mentality. The Ryder Cup tees off Friday morning and united everyone must stand.

Bonding 101 begins in private.

When play begins at Celtic Manor, Phil Mickelson will become the second American player, following Billy Casper (1961-1975), to play in eight consecutive Ryder Cup matches. Jim Furyk will be teeing it up for the seventh time and Tiger Woods, absent two years ago because of injury, will make his sixth appearance.

UFC 119: Ryan Bader Beats Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

The bout may set Bader up for a showdown with Jon Jones, in what would be a match-up of the two best young fighters in the light heavyweight division. If Jones is next for him, Bader will need to be better than he was Saturday night against Nogueira.

Mir knocks out 'Cro Cop' at UFC 119

INDIANAPOLIS -- Frank Mir salvaged a snoozefest of a fight by knocking out Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic with less than a minute to go in their fight, the main event at UFC 119.

The first round was filled with the clinch. Mir was unable to complete a takedown, after which both fighters seemed content to fighting on their feet.  Cro Cop landed an inadvertent groin shot, and Mir crumpled to the ground in pain. Mirko apologized profusely before the bout restarted.

The clinchfest continued in the second round. Herb Dean separated the pair twice as the crowd in Indianapolis grew restless, showering the fighters with boos. Neither fighter did much damage in the clinch, making it an uneventful round.

Cro Cop moved ahead in the third, landing more big punches. Mir seemed content to remain in the clinch until Dean separated them again. Mir finally woke up by the third, throwing a huge right knee that knocked Cro Cop out at 4:02.

Agent Malki Kawa Responds to Being Fired on Live TV at UFC 119

On Monday, MMA agent Malki Kawa explained his side of the story in response to receiving the boot from Matt Mitrione live on national television this past Saturday at UFC 119 in Indianapolis.

Mitrione made the public firing after his win over Joey Beltran during the Spike TV prelims and in a one-on-one interview with MMAFighting.com following the event clarified the dismissal by telling Ariel Helwani that earning $5,000 in sponsorship money was "highly unacceptable." Additionally, Mitrione and his wife felt slighted by Kawa allegedly telling Mitrione's wife that Mitrione's business was none of her's.

Kawa, the CEO of First Round Management, on Monday's The MMA Hour reasoned that he was only able to rake in $5,000 due to the constraints he was working within. Kawa said he picked up Mitrione as a client four weeks ago expecting an exclusive deal only to learn that Mitrione entered their business relationship with a family member already working sponsorships.

"I'm not upset that he got mad that it was only $5,000 but there were certain things I was bringing to the table that would have gotten him at a certain number and he would have been pretty happy had I been able to handle the whole thing A to Z," Kawa said.

Report: Nationals Not Likely to Re-Sign Adam Dunn

Filed under:

The roller-coaster ride that has been Adam Dunn's impending free agency this year has gone through yet another loop. The soon-to-be free agent started the 2010 season off by saying he wanted to sign a long-term extension with the Washington Nationals. The deal never happened and, as you'd expect them to, the Nationals tried to move their slugging first baseman at the trade deadline.

Which led Dunn to conclude that he wouldn't be back in Washington next season before changing his mind and becoming optimistic he'd be able to work out a deal after all. Now, in case your head isn't spinning enough, there's a report out of Washington that the Nationals aren't planning on bringing Dunn back no matter how optimistic he is.

According to the MASN report, the only person in the Nationals organization that wants Dunn back next season is owner Mark Lerner, who sees Dunn as a reincarnation of his childhood hero Frank Howard. As far as general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Jim Riggleman are concerned, he's a power hitter who is a major liability at first base. The only reason the Nats didn't trade him at the deadline was because they couldn't find a deal they felt was better than the two draft picks they'll get if Dunn leaves via free agency.

Indianapolis welcomes the UFC with open arms (and dolls)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The UFC hit Indianapolis for the first time this week, taking over the city's sports scene. UFC president Dana White said that the promotion's first foray into the Hoosier State has already been going well.

"We like to go to all these new markets and introduce the live event. I think it's been one of the reasons we've grown so fast and been so successful. At the live show, we infect 18-20,000 people, and when they leave, they go and infect three people. The live event is exciting. There's this buzz and this energy. We want to go into all these new markets," White said at Thursday's press conference.

"We're excited to be here. This place is known as a traditional sports town. I'm proud and happy to have the UFC here now."

White did not have an exact figure on ticket sales, but said that they have been "fantastic since day one."

Sports bars in the downtown Wholesale District have signs up reading, "Welcome UFC Fans." On Wednesday night, Buffalo Wild Wings hosted an autograph session with local fighter Matt Mitrione, and all the waitresses wore Tapout shirts. Thursday evening, Kilroy's filled their TV screens with the UFC's "Countdown to 119" and a rerun of WEC 50.

A group of around 75 fans crowded into the Old National Center -- where the Broadway show "Mary Poppins" is playing -- for the press conference on Thursday. Fans, including a young girl who carried a Brock Lesnar and Chuck Liddell doll instead of Barbies, clamored for the chance to take pictures and get autographs from the fighters on the main card.

The city's main newspaper, the Indianapolis Star, has devoted column inches to the UFC, educating MMA newbies and spotlighting the locals on the card.  With the city's beloved Colts out of town, it's easier for MMA to get front page coverage.

Outside of the sports scene, it's a bit harder to to tell that a major MMA event is taking over the town. There is a bigger presence reminding the city about the upcoming International Violin Competition and "Mary Poppins."

But it's too early to judge if the UFC is a success in Indiana, or if it has made the often-touted financial impact on the compact Indianapolis downtown. What will tell the story is how many fans crowd into the Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday night.

Rays Fans: It's Business, Not Personal

Of course David Price and Evan Longoria were right.

The sea of empty seats at Tropicana Field on Monday night, with 12,446 paying to attend and undoubtedly fewer than that actually in the building, was embarrassing. It was disheartening.

It was not, however, a surprise. This is the reality in Tampa Bay, and it's not going to get any better.

Price and Longoria surely know that, just as they probably understood before opening their respective Twitter apps and mouths Monday night that what they were about to say might do more harm than good. Well, maybe Price didn't. Unlike Longoria's premeditated, unprompted, face-of-the-franchise speech to the media, the ace pitcher's Twitter missive had the feel of a burst of frustration -- and he quickly pulled back in surprise (if not conviction) when hit with the inevitable backlash.

Washington Wizards Usher in New Era at Midnight Madness

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The basketball was a bit ragged, but everything else about the Washington Wizards Midnight Madness was a success.

New owner Ted Leonsis and the Wizards brought the college classic to the NBA for the first time on Monday, an idea he thought up when he "saw that YouTube video of John Wall doing his dance" at Kentucky's midnight madness last season. And for what was mostly just a glorified marketing grab, the event turned into a really good time.

Close to 3,500 fans were on hand at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., to ring in a new year of Wizards basketball in an event covered by NBA TV. It was celebration of a fresh start for a team that finished with just 26 wins last season.

"It all starts right now," Leonsis told FanHouse. "12:01, camp is open and my bet is that the guys are really excited to play in front of a big crowd the first night of practice."

"This is a restart," he continued. "The team really struggled the last two years both on the court and with attendance, so we want to try and build a team that fans can fall in love with."

Bengals Defense Buys Time for More-Publicized Offense to Click

A lot has been made about the Bengals offense because of the talent that quarterback Carson Palmer has around him. Many fans and NFL experts expected to see fireworks and explosions from this unit at the start of the preseason.

With the talents of pass catchers Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens and rookies Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham, many quarterbacks in the NFL would give anything for the unit that Palmer has around him, along with running backs Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott in the backfield. Life for Palmer and his new look offense should be easy on Sunday afternoons.

Wrong.

Whether an offense is star-studded or not, it takes time to develop chemistry because the field general must know how to work with the players around him, especially when there are egos involved. The Bengals offense will probably come around right about when their schedule gets tougher, but they are fortunate to have a defense that is in sync to carry them to 2-1.

"Just play football. Line up and do our job," said Bengals safety Chris Crocker. "The cards will fall where they fall. Let's not out-think ourselves. If they move the ball and get in the red zone, make them kick field goals. And we know that if we keep the offense under 14 points, then we are going to be in every ball game."

In consecutive weeks, the Bengals defense managed to commit four turnovers in each game (the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers) and helped sealed the wins. The Bengals were blitzed by a three-time Super Bowl quarterback in Tom Brady and -- in most situations going up against a future Hall of Fame signal caller -- defenses will get torched no matter how good they are.

But since their loss to the New England Patriots in the season-opener, the defense worked out their mishaps and has been playing lights out, especially when needed to.

"We had a little mishap the first game and now we have to take each game at a time and we're continuing to grow as a unit and find success," defensive end Frostee Rucker said.

Unlike the Cincinnati offense, the defensive players have been playing together for some time now, which gives them an edge and their performance should not be surprising. The Bengals are ranked no lower than 13th in all four of the major defensive categories, the highest at 10th in total yards allowed (300.7).

Clearly, the offensive players and coaching staff are a little frustrated with their output and rightfully so. Benson wants his carries and the self-proclaimed Dynamic Duo in Ochocinco and Owens want their catches. But they feel it will all click eventually.

Konrad dominates Grabowski in Bellator heavyweight tournament

Cole Konrad won a mostly boring, but dominant, decision over Damian Grabowski, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, in Bellator's heavyweight semifinals on Thursday in Milwaukee.

Konrad started with an immediate takedown, then followed up with knees in Grabowski's side. His control from the top, with scattered knees and punches, continued for the rest of the round. Grabowski barely did anything throughout the round.

He took a bit longer to get the takedown in the second round, actually throwing a punch and controlling Grabowski in the clinch before easily taking him to the ground. The referee tired of the grapplefest halfway through the second and stood the two fighters up. It didn't take long for Konrad to take the fight right back down to the ground, and even went for a submission, grabbing Grabowski's arm in a kimura attempt. It didn't work out, but it's a big step for the NCAA champion wrestler.

You're never going to guess what Konrad did to start the third and final round. Did you guess take Grabowski down? Then you were right! But this time, Grabowski was able to get out from under Konrad. Grabowski even tried for a takedown and guillotine. Neither were successful, and Konrad scored another takedown, controlling the bout until the final bell.

Konrad will now face Neil Grove in the finals of Bellator's inaugural heavyweight tournament. Grove is a dangerous striker and will provide interesting match-up for Konrad's wrestling.

Overheard and Understood: How King Felix and CC Sabathia Can Both Win

Filed under:

This week, members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America will fill out ballots for the BBWAA's postseason awards. Meanwhile, it's important for us to point out that voting patterns and criteria evolve.

The Most Valuable Player award, for example, has come to be based on something other than a strict definition of "value" -- something many critics of the BBWAA fail to understand. The way I explain it is that the MVP goes to the player who has the greatest impact on the outcome of the league as a whole. That's my way of tailoring the definition to the way the voting has evolved: giving the award to the player on a playoff team who has the best season, unless none stands out (i.e., Alex Rodriguez in 2003).

Likewise, the Cy Young Award voting continues to evolve. As recently as 2004, Roger Clemens won the National League version by going 18-4 -- second in wins and first in winning percentage -- while not finishing in the top four in innings, strikeouts or WHIP.

After all, the award is named for a guy who had 511 wins.

But in the past five years, BBWAA voters have de-emphasized wins. In 2008, 18-game winner Tim Lincecum beat out 22-game winner Brandon Webb in the NL, and last year, Lincecum and Zack Greinke won the award with 15 and 16 wins, respectively.

Which brings us to this year's race. Felix Hernandez has clearly been the best pitcher in the AL. He leads in ERA and innings and is second in strikeouts. But he also plays for the worst offensive team since the 1981 Blue Jays, and thus his record is only 12-12.

Jim Furyk Leads at Tour Championship

Jim Furyk Tour ChampionshipATLANTA (AP) -- Jim Furyk is one round away from the biggest payday of his career.

Furyk took over the lead at the Tour Championship on Saturday with an even-par 70, giving him a one-shot lead over Retief Goosen and Luke Donald going into the final round at East Lake and the conclusion of the FedEx Cup.

All three of them can get the $10 million bonus by winning Sunday.

Furyk was trailing most of the day until a big turnaround on the par-5 15th hole, when he made a 10-foot birdie and Donald hit into a bunker and three-putted for double bogey. Donald shot a 71.

Goosen won the Tour Championship in 2004, back when winning was only worth $1.08 million.

The low single! Pudzianowski uses wrestling to maul Butterbean

Fat guys and wrestling don't go together. At least not with James Toney and Eric "Butterbean" Esch. Randy Couture, an accomplished amateur wrestler used the low single to takedown and eventually take out Toney. Mariusz Pudzianowski has zero wrestling background but even he knows that dudes with huge guts can't defend the lower part of their legs. Pudzianowski danced around Butterbean for a minute before he shot at the 400-pounder's leg and drove through for a takedown. On the ground, Pudzianowski unloaded with 70-plus shots before Butterbean, who was like an elephant on its back, was saved a few seconds later.

A win over a grossly out of shape Butterbean, 44, isn't much to be proud of but it did allow the former World's Strongman champ to get back on the horse after he was destroyed by Tim Sylvia back in June. Pudzianowski (3-1) had major conditioning issues in that fight. He gassed within three minutes with his whole body turning purple. Pudzianowski was noticably less shredded in this fight.

Finish fights, fellas! UFN 22 pays off for those with killer instinct

Lesson plans should be handed out to anyone who didn't fight at Ultimate Fight Night 22. The course? Possibly the most important thing in the fight game - killer instinct! Few fighters have it at the highest level and those who possess it are at the top of the game. Those who don't shouldn't look far to explain why their careers don't amount to what they'd hoped.

The best example of the night in Austin, Texas came from the Efrain Escudero-Charles Oliveira fight. Escudero, the winner of Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter," showed why he may be bound for a .500 career in the UFC, while Oliveira exhibited why he's a thoroughbred prospect.

Escudero's reputation began to take a hit on Tuesday when he missed weight. Don't forget that he also struggled to make weight at UFC 103. The third round said all you needed to know about the two fighters. With 3:26 left in the fight, Escudero drilled Oliveira in the groin. The Brazilian was down on the mat for a few minutes and even had to rub his crotch in an effort to "relieve" the pressure. The crowd began booing and Escudero starting mugging for the fans by smiling and waving to the them.

Focus was lost. Oliveira got to his feet, told Escudero everything was okay and then proceeded to unload on him. Escudero simply wasn't ready for the restart. By the time he knew what was going on, the TUF 8 king was caught in a standing rear-naked choke and didn't even attempt to slam Oliveira to the ground in one final effort to extricate himself. He just gave up. That's two fights and two submission of the night bonuses. Oliveira likely earned $14,000 from the fight (Texas doesn't release official salaries) but got an additional $40,000 for the finish. He also received a $40,000 bonus at UFC on Versus 2. Oliveira, 20, is far from a finished project but his skill set, led by a nasty streak is impressive.

Cole Miller is far from perfect in the cage but he knows how to seize an opportunity. Not known for his standup, he rocked Ross Pearson with 3:26 left in the second. The Brit's legs buckled. Just seconds later, Miller caught him again with a combination and Pearson had trouble setting his feet. Instead of cautiously moving forward, Miller charged with a big knee and then dropped Pearson with an awesome left hook. There was no settling into the guard for some ground and pound. Miller pounced and slapped on a rear-naked choke. He now has five finishes in six UFC wins. Killer instinct also pays off with the wallet. Miller has now cashed four bonus checks totalling $160,000. That's nice cash for a guy who's likely to make just $16,000 to show and $16,000 to win his next time out.

And it goes without saying that Nate Marquardt took a step forward because of his killer instinct. When Rousimar Palhares tried to pull a Jamie Varner and essentially call a timeout, Marquardt had no part of it. Sure it was served on a silver platter, but Marquardt smashed and devoured Palhares leaving the Brazilian plenty of time to complain about greasing after he lost. Marquardt didn't get the knockout of the night bonus, that went to Brian Foster.

Fighters who look for decisions will eventually see their careers hit a wall. It was good to see several of the stars and prospects at UFN 22 go for the kill.

Palhares gives fast apology to Marquardt for greasing accusations

Rousimar Palhares admitted he was wrong about the greasing accusations he threw at Nate Marquardt. He apologized after the fight for making the accusation, saying:

"I'm very sorry for the accusations I made," Palhares told MMAjunkie.com. "Nate Marquardt did not cheat in any way, and I'm very sorry to him and his team for my actions in the fight."

Palhares is known for getting fighters in painful leg locks, and Marquardt prepared for that by shaving his legs. Freshly shaved legs are harder to get a hold of, but are by no means against the rules.

Palhares' team said that he has faced greased fighters in the past, and that makes him paranoid. At the same time, they made no excuses for their fighter.

"He should have never stopped," [Palhares' coach Murilio] Bustamante said. "Nate won fair and square and did exactly what he should have."

Kudos to Palhares for owning up to his mistake. That bit of humility prevented a long drama, as when B.J. Penn accused Georges St. Pierre, Marquardt's teammate, of greasing.

Helio Castroneves Wins Motegi IndyCar Pole

Filed under:

MOTEGI, Japan (AP) -- Brazilian Helio Castroneves claimed the pole position for the Indy Japan as Team Penske drivers dominated Saturday's qualifying session.

Castroneves' lap average of 201.992 mph put him ahead of Ryan Briscoe while series points leader Will Power qualified third as Team Penske took the top three positions.

"I'm very excited the three of us are starting in the top three spots," Castroneves said. "Hopefully, tomorrow we'll finish like this. It was a great effort for the entire team."

Power, who is making his debut at the 2.4 kilometer (1.5 mile) Twin Ring Motegi, holds a 17-point lead over defending series champion Dario Franchitti with two races left and could wrap up the title with a win.

"My goal was to come here and be ahead of the Ganassi guys, especially Dario," Power said. "I've just got to follow these guys tomorrow and keep Dario behind me."

Jimmy Raye Fired as 49ers' Offensive Coordinator

Jimmy Raye firedThe first coaching move of the 2010 NFL season involves an embattled assistant. The 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, the team announced Monday. QB coach Mike Johnson will take over Raye's duties.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora was the first to indicate Raye had been let go.

The 49ers showed some life on offense late last season, and they were virtually everyone's pick to win the NFC West this season. But their winless start has been eye-opening, especially with how the team has played on the road. In two losses away from San Francisco, Raye's offense scored just 16 points, and it didn't take long for his ability as a coordinator to be called into question.

With a road date coming up against Atlanta this weekend, an 0-4 start almost seems like a foregone conclusion, unless the 49ers can turn things around in a hurry.

NHL's New Blogger Policy in Place

Filed under:

PITTSBURGH -- Back in August, Puck Daddy's Greg Wyshynski had an eye-opening report regarding certain NHL teams and their unwillingness to allow bloggers into their locker room, especially when it comes to games played on the road (their thought process being, if they won't credential bloggers at home, why should they allow them to speak to their players on the road?).

One suggestion that was made included a policy change that would give those teams more control over access to their locker room on the road. Well, in the end, that's kind of what's happened.

Leon Washington Kickoff Return Videos: Seahawks Star Scores Twice

Leon Washington stole the show Sunday during Seattle's 27-20 win over San Diego, taking a pair of kickoffs to the house.

His first TD return came on the second half's opening kickoff, as he rumbled 101 yards to stake the Seahawks to a 17-0 lead.

Washington's second display of heroics came after San Diego had erased that lead, pulling into a 20-20 tie with a touchdown and two-point conversion. Washington answered the Chargers' rally by fielding a punt at his own 1, bouncing off a hit, then streaking 99 yards for another touchdown.

Check out the videos of Washington's returns below:

Reports emerge that Sonnen failed his UFC 117 drug test

Chael Sonnen had a career-defining performance in his challenge for the middleweight title at UFC 117 on Aug. 7 in Oakland, Calif. He came within two minutes of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history against Anderson Silva, winning the first four rounds until being submitted at 3:10 of the fifth at Oracle Arena.

That feel-good story may be just about all wiped out by the news that Sonnen failed his post-fight drug test, according to a report on Sherdog.com. George Dodd, executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission, told Sherdog's Greg Savage on Saturday that Sonnen had failed his post-fight urinalysis.

"(Sonnen) received his notice yesterday," Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Dodd didn't specify what substance Sonnen had tested positive for, but he said that all fighters on the card passed the tests for drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and marijuana, so the assumption is that Sonnen's failed test involves a performance-enhancing drug. Dodd told Savage the rest of the UFC 117 fighters tested were cleared.

MMA Junkie.com pointed out that there had been some message board chatter about Sonnen's appearance at UFC 117. For the Silva fight (weigh-in photo) and his fight at UFC 109 (weigh-in photo) against Nate Marquardt, Sonnen had an unusual amount of back acne. The scarring wasn't present in his previous fight at UFC 104 against Yushin Okami (weigh-in photo). "Backne" is one of the numerous side effects of steroid usage, though Dr. Johnny Benjamin, a medical consultant for MMA Junkie, also pointed out that there are other causes of the acne issue.

Sonnen was tentatively scheduled to face Silva in a rematch in early 2011. If the report is true, expect at least a nine-month suspension to be handed down by California. If Sonnen accepts the penalty and doesn't appeal, he could be back in the Octagon by June.

That means someone will get a chance to stand-in for a title shot against Silva. Nate Marquardt beat Rousimar Palhares this week to put himself back in the mix. With a win over Okami at UFC 122 in November, Vitor Belfort, scheduled on several occasions to face Silva in the past, could also be a candidate.

UFC 119: Ryan Bader Beats Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

by Michael David SmithFormer Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Bader earned the biggest victory of his MMA career Saturday at UFC 119, beating Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision.

The bout may set Bader up for a showdown with Jon Jones, in what would be a match-up of the two best young fighters in the light heavyweight division. If Jones is next for him, Bader will need to be better than he was Saturday night against Nogueira.

Evgeni Malkin vs. Rick Nash Fight Video

There's been quite a shift in the makeup of the Pittsburgh Penguins over the past decade or so. In the late 1990's and early 2000's they were loaded with skill and had little in the way of intimidating figures. This year's club, however, is packed with love 'em or hate 'em players, such as Matt Cooke, Arron Asham, Craig Adams, Mike Rupp, Eric Godard, Max Talbot and Brooks Orpik.

The toughness and grit those players provide seems to have started to rub off on the star players, as Saturday's preseason game against Columbus -- a 3-1 Penguins win -- saw Evgeni Malkin drop the gloves and throw down with Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash late in the third period. It was the fifth fight of the night, including a pair that involved swift-skating defenseman Kris Letang.

Here's the video of Malkin vs. Nash...

Tiger Woods' Golf Course Back on Track

by Milton Kent

Tiger Woods designs golf courseAn Asheville, N.C., golf course, designed by Tiger Woods is back in construction mode after developers agreed to reduce the potential impact the course would have had on the local environment.

Construction on The Cliffs at High Carolina, a mountain course scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, has picked up again now that developers have dropped by nearly half the effect the course would have had on adjacent trout streams.

A coalition of environmental groups had challenged permits issued by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, charging that the course would negatively impact trout streams without mitigation. Course developers slowed down the construction to address the issues, and cut the number of linear feet of impact from 3,132 to 1,665 by making the course shorter and by lengthening the walk between tees and greens.

The Cliffs will be Woods' first American course, and, in a statement issued Thursday, he proclaimed himself pleased with the changes.

ESPN to Station Crew Outside Miami Heat Training Camp

by Tom Ziller

LeBron JamesJust how closely will ESPN, and by extension the general NBA media, follow the Miami Heat this season? We'll get a taste next week, as USA Today's Michael Hiestand reports the network will ship an anchor, two analysts and at least one reporter to lovely Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., where the Heat are scheduled to hold media day Monday and break camp Tuesday.

Typically, ESPN sends reporters to a few media days around the league. The Lakers generally receive top billing, even in years in which Kobe Bryant isn't on the trade block. (Lakers' media day 2007 is legend for the media crush.) One would imagine teams in cities where ESPN has local sites (L.A., Boston, Dallas, New York and Chicago) will receive personal attention as well.

But nothing like what Miami -- err, Ft. Walton Beach -- will see. Hiestand writes that coverage will likely "outdo anything it did on Brett Favre's annual summer soul-searching." That's really saying something, considering ESPN ran live helicopter footage of Favre's SUV ride from the airport to training camp. So I suppose we can look forward to seeing Da'Sean Butler picking up the team's donuts via shopping center surveillance camera, or something.

Evan Longoria Likely to Miss Rays' Weekend Series Against Mariners

Evan LongoriaRays third baseman Evan Longoria is unlikely to play this weekend due to a strained left quad, and probably will not return until the middle of next week, manager Joe Maddon said Friday.

Longoria suffered the injury while attempting to turn a double play on Thursday in New York. Tampa Bay won that game to pull within a 1/2 game of the first-place Yankees.

The Rays, however, have the luxury of a healthy lead in the AL wild-card race -- their magic number for clinching a playoff berth is four -- and so there is little incentive for them to risk Longoria's long-term health when they have a spot in the postseason all but locked up.
