Report: Nationals Not Likely to Re-Sign Adam Dunn

Filed under:

The roller-coaster ride that has been Adam Dunn's impending free agency this year has gone through yet another loop. The soon-to-be free agent started the 2010 season off by saying he wanted to sign a long-term extension with the Washington Nationals. The deal never happened and, as you'd expect them to, the Nationals tried to move their slugging first baseman at the trade deadline.

Which led Dunn to conclude that he wouldn't be back in Washington next season before changing his mind and becoming optimistic he'd be able to work out a deal after all. Now, in case your head isn't spinning enough, there's a report out of Washington that the Nationals aren't planning on bringing Dunn back no matter how optimistic he is.

According to the MASN report, the only person in the Nationals organization that wants Dunn back next season is owner Mark Lerner, who sees Dunn as a reincarnation of his childhood hero Frank Howard. As far as general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Jim Riggleman are concerned, he's a power hitter who is a major liability at first base. The only reason the Nats didn't trade him at the deadline was because they couldn't find a deal they felt was better than the two draft picks they'll get if Dunn leaves via free agency.
