Controversial Call In Pittsburgh-Carolina Game

The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up a 5-4 shootout win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night, but it wasn't without a bit of controversy. With the game tied, 3-3, midway through the third period, Chris Kunitz was awarded his second goal of the game -- and seventh of the season -- to give the Penguins a 4-3 lead. The only problem, however, is that the puck appeared to cross the goal line after the whistle had blown.

The initial call on the ice was no goal, and after replays were shown on television -- complete with the on-ice sound -- it was clear that the whistle had already blown before the puck crossed the line. By now we've all seen the intent to blow rule take apparent goals away at one time or another because the referee was in the "act" of blowing the whistle. Rule 78.6 states: "When the Referee deems the play has been stopped, even if he had not physically had the opportunity to stop play by blowing his whistle."

That wasn't the case on this play. The whistle had flat out blown.

Despite that, the play was reviewed and, shockingly, the call on the ice was overturned and Pittsburgh was credited with a goal.

Here's the video ...

Tiger Woods Becoming Marketable Again

Tiger Woods used to be one of the most highly-sought after pitchmen. That is, until the sex scandal that enveloped his personal, public and private life; after which Woods became persona non-grata to all those who used to line up to sign him to endorsement deals.

But with the one-year anniversary of the car crash that started that whole drama approaching, Woods is slowly completing his PR makeover, and marketers are starting to buy it.

According to agent Mark Steinberg, Woods has engaged in "several constructive conversations," and that a survey to gauge Woods' public image has yielded very positive results.

"We are a society of second chances. That's been proven over the years," Steinberg said. "He's not going to be in any deal until he looks the company in the eye and has a serious conversation with them. 'How are you going to live your life? We want to be part of the redemption, rehabilitation. Are you serious about that?' And he knows that. He's comfortable with it. And he's going to do that."

Early End to First Round Cost Maiquel Falcao at UFC 123

Filed under:

Maiquel Falcao has been criticized for his handling of the third round in his UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris, with UFC President Dana White admonishing Falcao that he was wrong to play it safe after winning the first two rounds on the judges' scorecards. White said his message to Falcao after the third round was that "This isn't the Ultimate Staring Competition, it's the Ultimate Fighting Championship."

But while it's true that Falcao was unimpressive in the third round, it's been widely overlooked that the fight never should have gone to the third round -- or even the second round.

In fact, Falcao was about to submit Harris at the end of the first round, but the horn to end the round sounded seven seconds early, depriving Falcao of what almost certainly would have been a first-round submission victory.

UFC 123: Maiquel Falcao Beats Gerald Harris in Unimpressive Fashion

by Michael David SmithBrazilian newcomer Maiquel Falcao didn't do anything to endear himself to the UFC fans on Saturday at UFC 123, beating Gerald Harris by unanimous decision but doing it in fairly dull fashion, and doing it after a fight that included a dirty tactic of holding onto a choke after the bell rang.

The judges scored the fight for Falcao 29-27, 29-28 and 29-28, improving Falcao's professional record to 26-3. Harris, who had been on a tear this year, fell to 17-3.

Denny Hamlin Already Looking Toward 2011

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Only 25 laps into Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR season finale, Denny Hamlin realized his day was going to be long, and his hopes of holding off his two championship challengers diminished as the hot South Florida afternoon wore on.

When the green flag dropped, his 15-point championship lead over four-time defending Sprint Cup series champ Jimmie Johnson technically vanished, based on Hamlin's 38th-place starting position compared to Johnson's sixth.

Then on lap 25, Hamlin collided with Greg Biffle, sending Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota spinning on the infield grass -- an omen for what would come. Tire problems, pit road miscommunication and then an ill-timed caution period late in the race spelled his ultimate doom. The 30-year-old driver finished 14th in the race and became the first driver in NASCAR's seven-year Chase playoff format not to win the title when leading the championship with one race remaining.

"It's tough, trust me, these years don't come by too often in anyone's career,'' said Hamlin, who finished championship runner-up, 39 points behind the newly crowned five-time champion Johnson.

"I was privileged enough to be part of the closest championship in (Chase) history and give it my best effort, but it wasn't enough today. Our car got banged up and we just couldn't overcome it.''

Eric LeGrand Injury Reclassified as 'Incomplete'

Filed under:

Eric LeGrand and his family could potentially have gotten good news Tuesday, as the spinal cord injury he suffered in October was reclassified from "complete" to "incomplete."

Steven Kirshblum, the medical director of the Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation where LeGrand is currently receiving treatment, cautioned that while every instance of spinal cord damage is a case-by-case situation, a classification of "incomplete" is considered a better prognosis.

LeGrand's family announced another bit of good news -- the Rutgers center has been taken off a ventilator, and is breathing on his own for the first time since the injury.

Bengals vs. Jets: Brad Smith Runs Wild

Bengals vs. JetsKnowing what had happened earlier on Thanksgiving Day with the New England Patriots beating Detroit to move to 9-2 on the season, the New York Jets needed to keep pace Thursday night against Cincinnati.

Brad Smith did pretty much all of the high-stepping in the second half, as the Jets erased a 7-3 halftime deficit and pulled away to a 26-10 victory in front of a packed New Meadowlands Stadium crowd. The win bumped New York back into a first-place tie with the Patriots in the AFC East -- the two teams meet in Foxborough, Mass.,next week.

Some thoughts on the Jets' Thanksgiving win:

NASCAR Chairman Brian France Still Considering Changes for 2011

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Even in the midst of the most dramatic championship scenario NASCAR has had since the inception of its Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff, NASCAR Chairman Brian France said Friday he is still considering changes to the sport, including shortening the length of some races.

In a wide-ranging news conference at Homestead-Miami Speedway, site of Sunday's Ford 400 season finale, France shot down the possibility of moving the final race from South Florida and dismissed the likelihood of ever ending the year at Daytona International Speedway, which is a popular fan suggestion. He also spoke about the lagging television ratings and promised to announce impactful changes to the Nationwide Series in January.

Overall, however, France said this year's tight championship is a result of productive changes NASCAR had already introduced. Denny Hamlin's 15-point edge over Jimmie Johnson is the closest margin entering the final race in seven years. And Kevin Harvick is only 46 points back.

"I think the fact that we are so far into the cycle of, 'It's not the new car anymore, it's the car', and various other little things that we did, all have come together to give us ... if this isn't the best racing we've seen in a long, long time, I think I would be very surprised to hear anybody say that it wasn't,'' France said.

Vegas Trip Gets Blackhawks Ready to Go

Filed under:

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- When the Blackhawks announced they would spend two days in Las Vegas between the Canadian portion of their current road trip and the California section, the Patrick Kane jokes started flying, especially when he told reporters he'd be celebrating his 22nd birthday there.

Kane, who has a knack for getting in trouble away from the ice, apparently behaved himself in Sin City. (It did take three days for those limo photos to surface last year, however, so you never know.) And Kane, often quick to make light of things, was serious when it came to the topic of Las Vegas on Tuesday after Chicago finished its practice at HP Pavilion.

"I do think when the organization does something like that, you have to be respectful," Kane said. "That's the way you want to represent the Blackhawks. And for us, it was great for us to go there: it was fun, but now we get going again."

Many Chicago players spoke about "team-building" during the detour to Las Vegas, and coach Joel Quenneville said that was one of the reasons for scheduling such a trip.

"You can tell just going around the guys that the trip was effective in that way," Quenneville said. "At the start of the year, we didn't get into situations where guys could get more comfortable with each other, more familiarity."

The Blackhawks have lots of new pieces and perhaps they didn't gel quite as much initially as expected. The defending Stanley Cup champs are 11-10-2 and in fourth place -- not in the conference, but in their own division. And their road trip so far sort of illustrates the Blackhawks' season: they beat Edmonton 5-0, lost 7-2 at Calgary and then beat a tough Vancouver team 7-1.

US National Team to Face Fellow World Cup Second Rounder Chile in January

u.s. national team chile soccerAs the U.S. national team prepares for its final match of 2010 against South Africa in Cape Town, U.S. Soccer announced the opening game of 2011 -- a Jan. 22 showdown with Chile in Southern California.

The game will anchor the traditional January camp that coach Bob Bradley conducts at the Home Depot Center outside Los Angeles. The players he calls in for the camp tend to play for either MLS teams or clubs in Scandinavia that compete on a similar calendar.

Players based in Europe (especially those who get playing time) and those who may spend the winter out on loan (like Landon Donovan did last January), won't play a part.

Emotional Van Damme signs contract for his kickboxing comeback

Jean Claude Van Damme has made it somewhat official that he will return to the ring for a real kickboxing match in 2011. In this video, the soon-to-be 50-year-old is seen signing the contract to face former Olympian Somluck Kamsing.

JCVD said he wants to be the first action star to prove he can really fight. The celebration got a little sappy when Van Damme started apologizing for falling off the good-guy wagon.

"I did my rock n' roll type life, I fell down rock bottom," Van Damme said (1:42 mark -- NSFW). "And I've got that spot following me about Van Damme is drinking. Van Damme is doing cocaine. Van Damme is doing all that [expletive]. So I'm [branded] for life."

Then it was time to say sorry to the kids (1:55 mark).

"... the only way to forgive myself to all those children, with their posters 'Bloodsport' and 'Kickboxer' and their father telling them that 'you know he's a great guy and you should train like him' and all that. Then I [expletive] up my life and everything. I want to go back in that ring to prove to those children that they'll fight in my heart."

The fight is scheduled for April of 2011 in Las Vegas. We still have our doubts that the Nevada State Athletic Commission will license a 50-year-old, who hasn't fought in 20 years, but we don't want to ruin this special moment.

Benavidez won't close door on fighting Faber

Urijah Faber's entrance into the world of 135-pounders is great for the fight game. He's still the biggest star in the soon-to-be-dissolved WEC. A fight against Faber gives any opponent a shot at moving into the mainstream. Even his good buddy, Joe Benavidez, also a bantamweight, is jacked up about the move down from 145.

"The timing couldn’t be better right now because I just fought for the world title. I didn’t make it," Benavidez told Heavy.com. "Now it’s kind of like, ‘Hey, take your shot. Let’s see how good you can do.’ I’m not going to get a third fight with Dominick Cruz anytime soon unless I wipe out everyone in the division like I plan on doing. I just fought for the title. Now I’m just worried about fight-by-fight-by-fight and taking out everyone else in front of me. And Urijah can concentrate on that world title."

Faber and Benavidez are teammates at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento. Joe B is like a little brother to Faber. But unlike the Klitschkos in boxing, they're not blood brothers, which means the day may come when the UFC asks the two friends to fight.

From Heavy.com:

"Money talks, of course," Benavidez said. "If we’d both make each other rich, filthy rich off it, then we would probably have to do it. If we didn’t do it, then we’d be hurting each other by taking money out of each other’s pockets. It’d have to be a lot of money and of course we’d have to talk about it and I guess just go in there like it’s any other game. But there’s a really small chance that that will ever happen."

Benavidez did say that facing Faber is the last thing he wants to do. If the scenario develops, at least he's open to it. That must be music to Dana White's ears.

In 2011, White may have to deal with teammate issues at both light heavyweight and welterweight. If Josh Koscheck defeats Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight strap at UFC 124, his AKA training partner, Jon Fitch, is in line for a title shot. Fitch has indicated that he'll never take that fight. At 205 pounds, Jon Jones is probably a few wins away from a title shot. That could be a problem if his teammate Rashad Evans takes the title the from Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Benavidez and Faber should be able to avoid each other for a while. If Faber were to take the belt from the champ, Dominick Cruz, there are plenty of big fights out there. Miguel Torres would probably be the first guy on the list followed by a Cruz rematch and possibly Brian Bowles.

The NHL Cycle: Weekly Awards Watch, Top Plays, Hot Seat

Every Monday morning Adam Gretz and Chris Botta recap the week in the NHL.

CALDER TROPHY WATCH

No, you can't win NHL Rookie of the Year based on one month, but here are a few youngsters off to impressive starts:

1. Jeff Skinner, Carolina Hurricanes: A few teams may already regret letting the smooth finisher slip all the way to the tenth overall pick in the June draft. No one expected Skinner to produce out of the gate like this: six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 17 games. Better yet, he has earned the trust of Paul Maurice, who is giving the 18-year-old almost 17 minutes of ice-time per game.

2. Sergei Bobrovsky, Philadelphia Flyers: 10-2-1 with a 2.08 GAA and .932 save percentage, the rookie Russian goaltender is one of the great early-season surprises of the league. How BOB fares when he hits his first rough patch will say a lot about whether he'll be in the Calder race from beginning to end.

Lew Carpenter, Former Player and Coach, Dead at 78

Filed under:

Lew Carpenter, who won three NFL championships as a running back and then spent three decades as an assistant coach, passed away Sunday. He was 78.

Carpenter was on the Lions' 1953 championship team before winning consecutive titles with the Packers in 1961 and 1962, and appeared in two more championship games. He coached on staffs for Minnesota, Atlanta, Washington, St. Louis, Houston, Green Bay and Philadelphia.

"Lew Carpenter was a father figure, friend and a mentor," said Hall of Famer James Lofton, who Carpenter coached. "He was the first person I met with the Packers when he came to work me out at Stanford my senior year. We developed a special bond and he was a driving force for excellence behind all the players he coached. His favorite phrase on the practice field was 'You got to love.' ... Lew Carpenter loved the game and more so the men who played for him."

No cause of death was given.

Strikeforce welterweight Tyron Woodley, Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez and Michelle "The Hottie Karate" Waterson will all join in on humbling bullies with their fists. It appears from the trailer that Miller goes beyond hosting this season, and that he takes out a particularly mouthy bully.

WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson also has bullying on the brain. Along with WEC GM Reed Harris, "Smooth" visited a school in Arizona to talk about the dangers of bullying. He said that he was bullied some as a child, but was surprised to see how widespread the problem was.

"We asked that question in front of a cafeteria full of kids, and literally every single kid raised their hand that they have been bullied before in the past," Henderson said. "It was definitely surprising. I expected a fair amount of kids to raise their hand, but literally every single kid raised their hand. It was very surprising, and really very sad to see. I had my handful of experiences. It doesn't feel good. Nobody likes that."

It's crazy to think that professional fighters would ever get bullied, but many fighters tried martial arts to keep bullies at bay. Anything that fighters do to ease the burden on students is commendable.

Jorge Rivera describes his first fight as a 'beatdown'

Jorge Rivera has 26 fights under his belt. This Saturday at UFC 122, he'll face off with Alessio Sakara, another veteran of the UFC. Between the two men, they have 23 fights in the Octagon. Rivera reminisced about his first fight, a loss to Branden Lee Hinkle who was being cornered by UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman.

"I landed a good right hand that knocked his mouthpiece out and I had him on queer street for a second," he says. "I could hear Coleman screaming at him, 'Take him down!' He shot in with a double-leg and picked me up over his head and I was just thinking, 'Oh God, here we go.' I tried to grab on to the fence to hold on, but he slammed me hard. Then he just beat the piss out of me."

Rivera and Sakara aren't going to be in a title fight any time soon, but they also have a tendency to end their fights with knockouts. Their match-up almost guarantees fireworks in Germany on Saturday.

Monday Movers: Lee Westwood Overtakes Tiger for World's No. 1

Lee WestwoodEach week, Monday Movers will look back on the previous week in the golf world to see whose stock is rising and who will likely be heading back to the range.

On the Rise

Lee Westwood -- For the first time in 281 weeks, someone other than Tiger Woods sits atop the world rankings. The Englishman becomes the first European to hold the No. 1 spot since Nick Faldo did so in 1994. What's most surprising about the accomplishment is that it comes despite Westwood only finishing one tournament since his runner-up finish at the British Open in July. German Martin Kaymer missed his opportunity to deny Westwood and claim that spot for himself after failing to finish in the top two at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters this weekend.

Nationwide Top 25 -- The Nationwide Tour Championship provided the last opportunity for players battling to finish in the top 25 on the money list and earn a PGA Tour card for 2011. The finish did not disappoint. Brendan Steele's playoff victory catapulted him from 30th to 6th. He and three others moved from outside the top 25 to Nationwide graduates in the final week. Jamie Lovemark, 22, finished first in a race that saw just $2,010 separate the 25th and 26th places.

Ben Crane -- The American might become a trivia answer one day after winning the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in Southeast Asia. His 18-under finish was enough to hold off England's Brian Davis by a stroke. Although the Asia Pacific Classic doesn't count as an official PGA Tour victory, Crane still took home a $1 million first prize and heads to Shanghai for the HSBC Champions next week.

Graeme McDowell -- No one has enjoyed a breakout year in 2010 more than McDowell. The 31-year-old added a second European Tour victory to a season resume that includes U.S. Open champion, a Ryder Cup-clinching singles win, and now his first top-10 world ranking. The year could get even better for McDowell. He sits second in the Race for Dubai and has narrowed the gap behind Martin Kaymer. "I'm very excited," McDowell said. "I've punched a bit of a hole in Martin's lead and I'll go to Shanghai now and look to give him a run for his money."

Carl Edwards Breaks Phoenix Track Record to Win Pole

Carl Edwards set a track record at the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway on his way to winning the pole position for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500k.

Edwards ran a lap of 136.389 mph in his No. 99 Roush-Fenway Racing Ford to win the top starting spot. In the process, he broke the six-year-old track record of 135.854 mph, set by Ryan Newman in 2004.

"It was a good run," Edwards said. "The car was very easy to drive. Everything kind of lined up for us with this pole run. We had a great draw. The car was perfect and we focused on qualifying the whole time."

The seven-year veteran has 16 career victories, but hasn't won since the season-ending race at Homestead in 2008, a year he won nine races.

"Hopefully, we can end that here," he said. "There would be no better place. I love racing here and these last two races of the season, we'd like to go into the winter with a win, that's for sure."

With Two Weeks Left, ACC Atlantic Division Lurches Toward Chaotic Finish

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - As Dustin Hopkins' field goal split the uprights, so, too, did the road toward the ACC's Atlantic Division title.

One team - Florida State - raced off its sideline and toward a celebratory dog-pile on the middle of Bobby Bowden Field.

The other - Clemson - alternately stood and sat there in stunned disbelief.

Twenty-one seconds earlier, overtime appeared a certainty;, The Tigers had the Seminoles second-and-forever at their own 30.

Then came a pass interference penalty. And an 18-yard strike from E.J. Manuel to Rodney Smith.

And Hopkins - the goat a week earlier against North Carolina - booting a straight-and-true 55-yard field goal that booted Clemson out of the Atlantic Division race, handing Florida State a stunning 16-13 win.

Scrambling Mt. Temple

This past week in the Canadian Rockies, enough snow has fallen at high elevations and the daytime temperatures have remained cool enough that scrambling season has clearly ended. Sure, any summit is accessible any time of year, if you’re a black-belt mountaineer. But a patina of snow and/or ice makes a long, steep, rough scramble [...]

Nate Marquardt: GSP Will Destroy Jake Shields

by Michael David SmithJake Shields was the reigning Strikeforce middleweight champion and before that the reigning EliteXC welterweight champion, and so when he signed with the UFC, there was some question of which weight class he would pick.

Shields chose welterweight, beat Martin Kampmann by split decision in his first UFC fight, and will get the next crack at UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre if St. Pierre beats Josh Koscheck next month.

But just because Shields won his first fight doesn't necessarily mean that welterweight was the right choice. And one UFC middleweight, Nate Marquardt, believes that Shields' style of using his grappling to control his opponents on the ground would have been much more successful if he didn't have to cut down to 170 pounds.

World Series Game 3 TV Ratings Were Second-Lowest Ever

by FanHouse Staff

Game 3 of the World Series between the Giants and Rangers had the earliest start time in 23 years in an effort to draw more younger viewers. It ended up being the second-lowest-rated World Series broadcast ever.

Saturday night's 4-2 Rangers win garnered a 6.7 rating for FOX, down from a 9.1 in last year's Yankees-Phillies Game 3.

The only World Series game to register lower among viewers was at the other extreme as far as start time goes. Game 3 of the 2008 series between the Rays and Phillies didn't start until after 10 p.m. ET because of rain and drew a 6.1 rating.

The first pitch for Game 3 came at 7 p.m. ET -- 6 p.m. local time in Texas and 4 p.m. in San Francisco. It was the earliest start since Game 6 of the 1987 World Series.

Going up against college football on television, Saturday's game saw viewership numbers drop off considerably from the first two games of this World Series. Game 1 drew an 8.9 rating and Game 2 tallied an 8.5.

The rating number represents the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program.

New Congress Less Likely to Tackle Drugs in Sports

by A.J. Perez

Congressional hearings that have put the likes of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens in the crosshairs appear to be far less likely to occur as the Republicans seized control of the House of Representatives this week.

Rep. Darrell Issa, the incoming chairman of the House subcommittee that called the iconic hearings into steroid use in baseball, has no interest in exploring performance-enhancing drugs in sports, his spokesman told FanHouse.

"I think it's clear to the American people that jobs and the economy are more important than steroids in baseball," Frederick Hill said. "It would be unlikely that the Oversight Committee will turn its focus to steroids or any other performance-enhancing substances. We are more concerned about stimulus oversight, taxpayer money that went into TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) and health care laws."

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's first hearing on the subject came in the wake of the Bay Area Lab Co-Operative (BALCO) scandal that linked several athletes to steroids, human growth hormones and other performance-enhancing drugs. While the 2005 hearing was probably best known for McGwire's refusal to answer questions and Rafael Palmeiro's denials of using drugs months before he tested positive for steroids, anti-drug crusaders applauded the panel's efforts that pressured Major League Baseball to impose more strict testing standards and led to an outside investigation headed by former Senator George Mitchell.
