Ramirez announced Wednesday that he would be exercising his $14.6 million player option for the 2011 season. That decision takes care of his immediate future and also puts the Cubs on the clock to make a decision about Ramirez's $16 million option for the 2012 season. If they don't exercise it, they'll owe Ramirez a $2 million buyout instead.
While they'll likely only be out the smaller amount of money, there's reason to hope that this year's salary won't be a waste. Ramirez's injury woes help explain why he finished with a .241 average, a .294 on-base percentage and his lowest OPS+ since 2002, and things got much better in the second half.
