Filed under: RangersThe restricted free agents still in need of contracts are finally starting to get their new deals as we inch closer to the start of NHL training camps. A day after Bobby Ryan signed a five-year pact with the Anaheim Ducks, the Rangers and defenseman Marc Staal inked a five-year contract worth a reported $19.875 million (annual cap hit of $3.975 million). It's a nice chunk of cash right now, but should prove to be a bargain for the Rangers before it expires (if it already isn't).
The 23-year-old Staal played all 82 games for the Rangers last season, leading the team in ice-time and was regularly matched up against the opposition's top players. In terms of durability, he's been a rock for the Rangers on the blueline, having played in 244 of a possible 246 games since making the team prior to the 2007-08 season.
He's quickly grown into New York's most reliable defenseman, and has also seen his offensive game improve each season, tallying 13 goals and 39 assists in his career. He set career-highs with eight goals and 19 assists this past season. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
