Sami Samir Hassoun Charged in Bomb Plot Outside Wrigley Field

Filed under: CubsSami Samir Hassoun has been charged with one count of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and one count of an attempted use of an explosive device, the FBI's Chicago office stated on Monday, according to NBC Chicago.

The 22-year-old Lebanese medical student, who considers Sept. 11 a "beautiful day" according to the article, is in custody after putting a backpack containing what he thought was an explosive device into a Wrigleyville trash can -- outside of Wrigley Field where the Cubs play -- in an attempt to cause chaos in the city of Chicago.

Officials stated that Hassoun's arrest came months after working with an informant and an undercover FBI agent. Hassoun, who moved to Chicago with his family a few years ago, reportedly had become increasingly unhappy with how the city was run.

Hassoun has fervently expressed interest in committing violent acts against the city in order to cause radical change. The criminal complaint in the article notes that Hassoun wanted to cause a "revolution" and "kill the nightlife" in Chicago.
