Wagner, who has said he will retire at season's end, strained his left oblique in the 10th inning of the Braves' 5-4, 11-inning Game 2 NLDS victory over the Giants on Friday night. The Braves have just about ruled him out for the rest of the Division Series, but they are not ready to replace him on the roster, because then he'd be ineligible for the NLCS.
Manager Bobby Cox said on Saturday that the Braves will wait until before Game 3 on Sunday to make a decision on Wagner's roster spot. They may just play a man short, or they may activate another pitcher, perhaps Takashi Saito. Although Saito is an experienced closer, Cox said he probably wouldn't put Saito right into the ninth-inning role because he's been out for a few weeks.
